Danny La Rue will have been 97 years old today.

Danny La Rue was a famous Irish-English singer and entertainer. He was born to Thomas and Mary Carroll on July 26, 1927, in Cork, Ireland. His family relocated to England when he was six years old. Danny grew up on Earnshaw Street in Covent Garden, Central London, during The Bliz period.

Danny’s career began when he joined the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he moved to London and began working in various clubs and theaters. His big break came in the 1950s when he started performing at different theatres in London. Danny’s unique style, charisma, and ability to mimic famous female stars quickly made him a favorite. Some of the female celebrities he impersonated include Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Marlene Dietrich, Margot Fonteyn, and Margaret Thatcher.

In the 1960s, Danny La Rue’s career skyrocketed. He became one of the most famous drag artists in the UK, known for his elaborate costumes and witty performances. He headlined numerous West End shows and became a television regular, appearing on variety shows and in his TV specials, including “Oh, What a Lovely War!”, “Every Day’s a Holiday,” “The Frankie Howerd Show,” “Twiggs, Decidedly Dusty,” “Entertainment Express,” and “Blackpool Bonanza.”

In 1898, Shaw married Charlotte Payne-Townshend, an Irish political activist. Their marriage was unconventional, based on mutual respect and intellectual companionship rather than romantic love. They did not have any children. Charlotte supported Shaw’s work and shared his interest in social reform and political activism.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contributions to literature in 1925. In 1938, he was also awarded an Academy Award for the screenplay of Pygmalion, making him the only person to have won both a an Oscar and Nobel Prize.

In his later years, Shaw continued to write and was active in political and social causes. He lived a long and productive life, passing away at 94 on November 2, 1950.
