Sir Henry Whitten-Brown

Henry Witten-Brown was a renowned British military officer and aviator. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 23, 1886.

He developed a keen interest in engineering and aviation. His career began as an engineering apprentice at British Westinghouse in Manchester. He was commissioned into the University and Public Schools Brigade (UPS). Due to his hard work and dedication, he rose to the rank of   Second Lieutenant in the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

Witten-Brown served as a lieutenant colonel in the Home Guard during the Second World War. After the war, he joined the RAF as a pilot officer at RAF Training Command.

On June 14, 1919, Henry Witten-Brown, the navigator, and John Alcock, the pilot, embarked on the first non-stop transatlantic flight. They flew a modified Vickers Vimy bomber from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Clifden, Ireland. The flight took approximately 16 hours and 27 minutes and covered about 1,890 miles. Their successful landing marked a significant milestone in aviation history, proving the feasibility of long-distance air travel.

After the historic flight, Witten-Brown continued to work in aviation and engineering. He held various positions, including consulting for several aviation companies. He also advised the British government on aviation matters and contributed to the development of civil aviation.

Henry Witten-Brown was knighted in 1919 for his contributions to aviation, becoming Sir Henry Witten-Brown. He was also awarded the Air Force Cross (AFC) and received numerous international accolades from aviation societies and institutions. The successful transatlantic flight earned him and Alcock the Daily Mail prize of £10,000.

Haile Selassie will have been 132 years old today.

Haile Selassie Born Lij Tafari Makonnen on July 23, 1892, in Ejersa Goro, Hararghe, Ethiopian Empire. Renowned as the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. Haile Selassie is considered a defining figure in modern Ethiopian history and the central figure of Rastafari, a religious movement in Jamaica.

Haile Selassie was educated at home by French missionaries and received a traditional Ethiopian education. His early career was shaped by his father’s prominent position and his own intellect and ambition. At the age of 13, he was appointed as the Dejazmatch of Gara Mulatta in 1905 by his father.

In 1916, he was proclaimed Crown Prine and heir apparent after Empress Zewditu took the throne and, the same year, Regent Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia. Upon Zewditu’s death in 1930, he was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia, taking the throne name Haile Selassie I.

Haile Selassie embarked on modernization efforts to bring Ethiopia into the 20th century. In 1931, he introduced Ethiopia’s first written constitution, which aimed to centralize and stabilize the government. He also worked to modernize the army, education system, and infrastructure, strengthening Ethiopia’s sovereignty and international standing.

In 1935, Italy, under Benito Mussolini, invaded Ethiopia. Despite fierce resistance, Ethiopian forces were overwhelmed, and Haile Selassie went into exile in 1936. He addressed the League of Nations, condemning the invasion and appealing for support. His speech highlighted the dangers of fascism and imperialism, gaining international sympathy and support.

With the help of Allied forces during World War II, Haile Selassie was restored to the throne in 1941. He continued his modernization efforts, establishing the United Nations and the Organization of African Unity (OAU), where he significantly promoted African independence and unity.

Despite his early successes, Haile Selassie’s later years were marked by growing unrest and opposition. Economic challenges, political dissent, and allegations of corruption and human rights abuses tarnished his reign. In 1974, a military coup led a Marxist–Leninist junta, the Derg. He was placed under house arrest, and in 1975, he died under mysterious circumstances, widely believed to have been assassinated.

Haile Selassie received numerous awards and honors throughout his life, including the Honorary Knights Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (UK) and the Legion of Honour (France).

Haile Selassie married Menen Asfaw in 1911. He had seven children: Princess Romanework, Princess Tenagnework, Crown Prince Amha Selassie, Princess Zenebework, Princess Tsehai, Prince Makonnen, and Prince Sahle Selassie.
