South African character actor Cecil Kellaway was born on August 22, 1890, in Cape Town, South Africa. He was of English descent, with both of his parents hailing from the United Kingdom. His father, a civil engineer, moved the family to Australia when Cecil was a child.

Cecil recieved his education at the Normal College, Cape Town, and in England at Bradford Grammar School. He studied engineering and got work at an electrical engineering firm in Cape Town after returning to South Africa.

Cecil Kellaway married 17-year-old Doreen Elizabeth Joubert in 1919, and the couple had two sons. His career acting career began in Australian live theatre. He signed a contract with J. C. Williamson Ltd in 1921. Some of his thearter performance came in “Mary” (1922–23), “The Cabaret Girl”(1923–24), “Kissing Time” (1924),”Hold Everything” (1929), “Florodora” (1931), “A Warm Corner” (1931),”Princess Charming” (1928), “A Night Out again”, “Sons o’ Guns” (1931), “Blue Roses” (1932), “Hold my Hand” (1932), “The Gipsy Princess” (1933), and “Waltzes from Vienna” (1936).

He made his film debut in “The Hayseeds” (1933). Kellaway appeared in over 100 films throughout his career. Some of his most iconic performances include roles in “The Luck of the Irish” (1948), where he played a leprechaun, “Harvey” (1950), and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967), in which he portrayed a Monsignor. His performance in “The Luck of the Irish” recieved an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, as did his role in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

He passed away on February 28, 1973, at the age of 82 in Hollywood, California

John Lee Hooker, the renowned American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist, was the youngest of eleven children born to William Hooker, a sharecropper and Baptist preacher, and Minnie Ramsey, a homemaker. Hooker was raised in a deeply religious household where secular music was forbidden. His parents separated when he was four, and his mother remarried William Moore. William Moore, his stepfather, a blues musician, introduced him to the guitar. He was born on August 22, 1912, in Tutwiler, Mississippi, United States.

Hooker left home at the age of 14 and reportedly never saw his mother or stepfather again, settling in Detroit, Michigan. In Detroit, he worked various factory jobs as a janitor during the day when his recording career began in 1948. His unique style, which fused Delta blues with the rhythms of boogie-woogie, began to attract attention. In 1948, Hooker recorded “Boogie Chillen’,” which ‘became an unexpected hit and best-selling race record of 1949.

Some of his hits include “Crawling “ing Snake” (1949), “Boom Bo” (1962), “Dimples “1956),” “One Bo “n, One Scotch, and “One Beer” (1966)..” Hooker’s mHooker’s not only popular with African American audiences but also with a wider global audience.

Most of his later albums, including “The Heale” (1989), “Mr. Lucky” (1991), “Chill Out” (1995), and “Don’t Loo “Don’t” (1997), “were album chart successes in the United States and the United Kingdom.

He won four Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Hooker was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame.

John Lee Hooker was married three times throughout his life. His first marriage was to Alma Hopes in 1943, with whom he had one child; his second was to Maude Mathis in 1944; they had six children and divorced in 1969, and he married again to Sarah Jones. One of his sons, Robert Hooker, would later become a musician himself.

By the time of his death in 2001, John Lee Hooker’s net worth was estimated to be $3 million. John Lee Hooker died at the age of 88 in Los Altos, California, on June 21, 2001,

Henri Cartier-Bresson, widely remembered as The Eye of the Century, was a celebrated French artist and humanist photographer. Born on August 22, 1908, Henri was revered as a master of candid photography and the first user of 35mm film. He established the genre of street photography and saw photography as capturing a crucial moment. He was among the founding members of Magnum Photos in 1947.

Henri was born to a wealthy textile manufacturer and descended from Charlotte Corday. At the age of 5, Henri began studying painting and took an apprenticeship in his uncle Louis’ studio. He also tried learning music, where his uncle Louis, a gifted painter, introduced him to oil painting; in 1972, he saw Henri enrolled at a private art school and the Lhote Academy. From 1928 to 1929, he studied art, literature, and English at the University of Cambridge. There, he became bilingual. Henri was conscripted into the French Army in 1930 and stationed at Le Bourget near Paris.

In 1929, his aviation squadron commandant placed him under house arrest for hunting without permission. Henri visited the United States in 1935 after receiving an offer to exhibit his work at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York.

Cartier-Bresson returned to France and applied for a position with famed French filmmaker Jean Renoir. He appeared in Renoir’s 1936 film Partie de Campagne and the 1939 film La Règle du Jeu, where he worked as a second assistant and portrayed a butler. In the 1970s, he primarily abandoned photography in favor of painting.

During World War II, Henri joined the French Third Army as a Corporal in the film and photo unit. In 1937, Henri married a Javanese dancer, Ratna Mohini. Henri Cartier-Bresson died on August 3, 2004, 19 days before his 96th birthday. According to reports, his death was natural. 

Henri Cartier-Bresson married twice, first to  Ratna Mohini, a Javanese dancer, in 1937; they divorced in 1967. He married again to Martine Franck in Martine Franck, a Magnum photographer, in 1970, with whom he had a daughter, Mélanie.

He has contributed massively to literature and culture. 

Ray Bradbury would have been 104 years old as of August 22, 2024, but he died on June 5, 2012, at 91, in Los Angeles, California. He was married to Marguerite McClure and had four children. He is gone, but he is not forgotten.
