Sir Charles Hallé was a legendary Anglo-German pianist, conductor, and founder of England’s most esteemed orchestra, The Hallé Orchestra. Born Karl Halle on April 11, 1819 in Hagen, Westphalia.
From a tender age, Charles Hallé’s musical journey was marked by extraordinary achievements. His father, recognizing his talent, initiated his piano lessons, and by the age of four, Charles was already performing in public. His exceptional talent led him to study under the mentorship of Christian Heinrich Rinck at Darmstadt.
Charles’s career peaked during the revolution when he moved from Paris to London in 1848 with his first wife, Desirée Smith de Rilieu. Charles performed and conducted several concerts in London, including playing a complete series of Beethoven’s piano sonatas.
In 1858, Charles Halle realized his vision of creating a world-class orchestra with the formation of the Halle Orchestra. Initially composed of a small ensemble of talented musicians, the Halle Orchestra’s first home was the Free Trade Hall.
Halle was twice married: first to Desirée Smith de Rilieu, on November 11, 1841, who died in 1866; and his second marriage was to renowned violinist Madame Wilma Neruda on July 26, 1888.
Charles was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1888 for his outstanding contribution to music. He died on October 25, 1895, October 25, of 76.
