George I was born to Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and Sophia of the Palatinate, the granddaughter of King James I of England, on May 28, 1660, in Hanover, Germany. Raised in the German principality of Hanover, George received a typical aristocratic education of the time, focusing on military training, statecraft, and languages.

Before becoming king, George’s career was rooted in the administration and expansion of his family’s German territories. He married his cousin, Sophia Dorothea of Celle, in  1682, with whom he had two children: George II, his successor, and Sophia Dorothea. His marriage, however, was troubled, leading to a separation and Sophia Dorothea’s lifelong imprisonment at Ahlden House after an affair scandal in 1694.

George became Elector of Hanover in 1698 upon his father’s death. He expanded Hanoverian influence in the Holy Roman Empire, demonstrating capable leadership and military prowess, particularly in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714).

The death of Queen Anne in 1714 led to a succession crisis in Britain. The Act of Settlement 1701, designed to ensure a Protestant succession, bypassed over 50 closer Catholic relatives and named George’s mother, Sophia, and her Protestant descendants as heirs. Sophia died shortly before Anne, making George the closest Protestant heir. On August 1, 1714, George ascended the British throne as King George I, marking the beginning of the Hanoverian dynasty.

King George I spent much of his reign traveling between Britain and Hanover, maintaining his interests in both territories. He died of a stroke on June 11, 1727, at the age of 67, during a visit to Hanover and was buried there.
