Former Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott has revealed that Arsenal are the best team in the Premier League ahead of Manchester City despite a 3-3 draw with Southampton on Friday at the Emirates.
Theo Walcott was on target as Southampton drew with Arsenal in a six-goal thriller. Arsenal Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale gifted Southampton an early goal in 27 seconds as Carlos Alcaraz intercepted his simple and slot it to the net giving Southampton the lead. Theo Walcott doubled the St. Saints lead in the 14-minute.
Gabriel Martinelli pulled one back for the host to reduce the deficit to one before the break. Duje Caleta-Car doubled Southampton’s lead again in the 66 minutes after heading past Ramsdale from a corner kick. Martin Odegaard and Bukayo scored in the 88 and 90 minutes to earn Arsenal their consecutive draw in the Premier League.
The result means Arsenal are five points ahead of Manchester City ahead of their clash on Wednesday, with the Champions having played two games less.
However, Theo Walcott believes Arsenal are better than Manchester City and can stun the Champions on Wednesday.
What did Theo Walcott say?
He told NBC Sport after the 3-3 draw with Arsenal: “Arsenal are just incredible. We played Man City the other week and I thought Arsenal were way better than them.
“That’s how I see Arsenal at the moment. We can take a lot of positives from this game because they [Arsenal] are the best team in this league at this moment in time.’
“Walcott spent more than a decade at Arsenal and decided not to celebrate a goal that looked set to help Southampton climb off the bottom of the Premier League.
‘My son’s going to be really disappointed that I didn’t celebrate but I just couldn’t.
“It was a very indifferent day for me today, I felt like I couldn’t win. Hopefully now Arsenal can go on and win the league and beat Man City on Wednesday.”
He added: “Everyone feels a bit deflated I think, that’s the sense I got from the fans and both teams,’ Walcott added. ‘We were in a great position of course and we kind of threw it away.
“Before the game we would have taken a point against the team at the top of the league but with five minutes to go we felt we were in control.”
While Arsenal faces Manchester City on Wednesday in a title decider game, Southampton will face Bournmount in a relegation battle game. A win could see them move out of the drop zone.
