The new US military base in Redzikowo, Poland, is being addressed as a “priority target” by none other than Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said the US anti-missile base “is a priority target for potential neutralization.”
This move, coupled with the deployment of British Storm Shadow missiles by Kyiv, has only added fuel to the fire. And let’s not forget Russia’s own expansion of conditions under which it may use nuclear weapons.
This warming was a response to US President Joe Biden’s authorization of the use of long-range American missiles against Russia by Ukraine.
The decision of the United States, coupled with the deployment of British Storm Shadow missiles by Kyiv, has only added fuel to the fire. And let’s not forget Russia’s own expansion of conditions under which it may use nuclear weapons.
The first permanent U.S. military base in Poland, which houses the Aegis Ashore missile defense system, has opened. The site is in the village of Redzikowo, in northern Poland, and includes a radar and SM-3 launcher.
Zakharova said: “The opening of the missile defense base in Poland is yet another provocative step by the U.S., leading to an increase in strategic risks. This base has long been included in the list of priority targets for potential strikes by Russian forces.” It also raises ‘nuclear danger’, she added.
The US base in Redzikowo near the Baltic coast was opened to reinforce the NATO missile shield. In addition, a €30 million EU-Ukraine ‘solidarity corridors’ plan to renovate railways, including parts of Moldovan routes, seeks to ‘pull NATO’s military infrastructure to Russia’s borders’ instead of prioritising the food security for Ukraine, spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed.
In the end, this isn’t just about missiles and military bases. It is about influence, power, and the ever-shifting balance of global politics. As we watch this drama unfold, we can only hope that cooler heads prevail. But given the current climate, that might be wishful thinking.
In the game of global politics, is anyone truly winning, or are we all just pawns in a much larger game?
