Bruce Willis played John McClane in the movie, which led to four more movies with the same name.
Yippee-ki-yay!
On this day in history, July 15, 1988, the movie “Die Hard” came out, and John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, was presented to the world.
The famous movie led to four sequels and a video game series: “Die Hard 2,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” and “A Good Day to Die Hard.”
The story is mostly about how McClane, a police officer in New York City, tries to save his ex-wife and her coworkers after a terrorist group takes them hostage at a Christmas party.
The ad for “Die Hard” said, “Terrorists have taken over a building high above L.A., taken hostages, and declared war.”
“One man was able to get away… A cop who isn’t on duty is hiding inside somewhere. He’s alone and tired… and the only chance for anyone.”
Bonnie Bedelia played McClane’s wife, Holly, and Alan Rickman played the villain Hans Gruber in “Die Hard.”
John McTiernan led the movie. IMDB says that the movie was written by Roderick Thorp, Jeb Stuart, and Steven E. de Souza.
Most of what happens in the movie occurs at the made-up Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles.
At the time the movie was made, 2121 Avenue of the Stars, where the scenes were filmed, was the offices of 20th Century Fox.
Some people say that “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie, even though it came out in July, has an R rating, and has a lot of solid action scenes.
One of the writers of “Die Hard” weighed in on whether it should be considered a Christmas movie.
In 2017, someone asked de Souza if he thought the movie was a Christmas movie.
He tweeted, “Yes, because the studio rejected the Purim draft,” and added the phrase “#DieHardIsAChristmasMovie.”
Purim is a holiday for Jews.
Polls have shown that people have very different ideas about whether or not “Die Hard” should be included in the list of holiday classics, despite what the movie’s author said.
Morning Consult/Hollywood Reporter did a study in 2018 and found that only 25% of Americans think “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie. However, the results vary by gender and age.
32% of guys thought “Die Hard” was a Christmas movie, but only 20% of women thought so.
When the results were broken down by age, people over 65 were least likely to think of “Die Hard” as a Christmas movie.
Only 13% of those people agreed.
37% of people between the ages of 30 and 44 who were polled said they thought “Die Hard” was a Christmas movie.
Also, people between 45 and 54 were more likely to think of “Die Hard” as a Christmas movie. 31% of the people who took the question agreed it was a Christmas movie.
