Moving can be mind-blogging and an exhausting process. Many people are prone to forget some important tasks and items to carry when involved in this daunting relocation process. Moving can become easier if divided into small doable tasks. You can follow this below-given this long distance moving checklist for a stress-free move.

Checklist 3-4 weeks before the move:

Listing essential items:

The foremost priority when planning to move to another place is to prepare a plan ahead of time. Go through all your possessions and make a moving out checklist mentioning all the belongings you wish to relocate. Start sorting your stuff room by room and consider the stuff you want to shift and get rid of non-essential ones.

Donating the non-essential items:

Now that you are aware of the stuff you are going to relocate and the stuff you’re purging out, re-check the non-essential items and prepare a final checklist. Assess the condition of unwanted items. If their condition is fine then you can consider donating them.

Organize a garage sale or sell non-essential items online:

It’s not recommended to donate every item or dump them in the garbage. There might be some belongings that are valuable but are not good enough to fit in your new home. In such a case, it is better that you consider selling them. Not only you will get rid of extra stuff but also will get some cash for your moving expenses. You can either organize a garage sale or can sell the unwanted items online.

Collect the required packing material:

Packing valuable possessions is essential to protect them from any damages while in transit. Therefore, start collecting the required packing supplies such as cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, packing tape, newspaper, etc to pack your stuff.

Submit the request of changing address:

If you want your mails and bills to receive at your new address then get your address changed with the post office and utility service provider.

Choose the relocation company:

Before you choose anyone relocation company get price estimates from at least 3 or 4 moving companies. After you receive the cost estimates compare them and choose the one which you think is reasonable. Also, look for movers who are professional and experienced in providing moving services.

Checklist 2 weeks before the move:

Pack the less used items:

Now is the perfect time to pack the items you think you might not need for a long time. For example, if you are moving in the summers then you can pack all your winter clothing.

List down the prices of valuables:

At the time you are packing, don’t forget to list down the prices of the expensive items you are moving. You might have to get them insured.

Contact the insurance company:

It is important o get your insurance policies updated with the new address and new amount if the price of your new apartment is more compared to the old one. Also, ask if your antiques can be insured.

Listing the parties who are to be notified about relocation:

Make a list of the friends, employers, colleagues, relatives, and neighbors you have to alert about your move. They must be aware of their new address in case they want to visit you.

Notify HR about your off day:

You must notify your HR that you might have to supervise the move and thus, take off from the office on the actual moving day.

Repair and maintain the old house:

If you think your old house needs repairing then you should get it done as a well-maintained house is easy to sell.

Checklist 1 week before the move:

Get rest of the items packed:

Now that the moving date is coming close you must be ready with your packed stuff. Therefore, start packing the items that are not packed yet.

Check if your furniture has any scratches:

You must check your furniture for any damages before it is packed to know that the furniture is not damaged during the transition process.

Label the boxes:

After the stuff is packed in a moving box don’t forget to provide an appropriate label to them.

Checklist on a moving day:

Pack a box having essential items:

There might be some items you may need to use on the moving day such as toiletries, medicines, towels, food items, water bottles, etc. So, make sure to pack an essential bag.

Prepare the house for movers:

Now that you are done with all your packing, make sure that your house is safe enough for the movers. Clear the moving pathway of any obstacles.
