Everybody on the planet has a personal responsibility to live a more sustainable and environmentally friendly existence. But this doesn’t mean you must go off-grid and live solely off the land. No matter your budget or lifestyle, you can make many energy-efficient improvements around your home to fulfill your obligation to the sustainability of our world.

Whether you choose to take the plunge and invest in solar paneling, plant the vegetable garden you have always dreamed about, or purchase petrol generators from Mytopia, making thoughtful and effective sustainable changes in your home can significantly reduce your energy bills and save you plenty of money in the long run.

What Does Eco-Friendly Mean?

In its simplest form, the term ‘eco-friendly’ describes products, processes, and lifestyles that do not harm the environment or other people. However, this can take many forms and vary in impact and efficiency.

Let’s take a closer look at greenhouse gases and the carbon footprint of a company. In the course of producing and shipping products, it’s almost inevitable that greenhouse gases will be emitted to some degree. However, a company can actively strive to minimize and potentially offset these emissions by adopting sustainable business practices and policies. This is a tangible example of how ‘eco-friendly’ is not just a buzzword but a real commitment to the environment.

Identifying Eco-Friendly Products

Once you understand the importance and benefits of using eco-friendly products, it is not difficult to identify them when purchasing new items and switching to sustainable setups. However, it is vital to be cautious when assessing a product’s true impact on the environment. Some companies have chosen to advertise their products as sustainable or eco-friendly without legally meeting the necessary standards to do so.

To guarantee you are investing in options that are truly contributing to a sustainable future, look for identifying markers that certify their credibility. Organizations such as the Energy Star Program, USDA Organic, and the Environmental Protection Agency often provide these certifications.

Sustainable Improvement Tips

You can make many improvements and swaps to transform your home into a more sustainable setup, reducing your carbon footprint and positively contributing to the environment.

Switch to LED Bulbs

One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to make your home more environmentally friendly is to switch out every bulb for an LED alternative. Although they are slightly more expensive to initially purchase, they easily pay for themselves in the long run, with an extended lifespan and energy-saving properties.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

There have been many important advancements in the past decade when it comes to energy-efficient appliances. If you are in the process of upgrading or replacing appliances around your home, it is recommended that you prioritize products that are Energy Star certified, which means they have met the strict criteria set out by the U.S. Department of Energy.

If you aren’t able to update your appliances, making small changes throughout your home can contribute to lower energy usage. Cover pans with lids while cooking, use smaller appliances when possible, and aim to run your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.

Upgrade Windows & Doors

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that around 30% of home energy is lost due to poorly maintained windows and doors. If you notice that your energy bills significantly increase during peak summer or winter months, upgrading and properly sealing the doors and windows around your home may be the money-saving solution you need.

If you suspect you have drafty doors or windows, simply hold a lit candle next to the seam you suspect may be faulty. Should it bend, it is a clear indication that air is moving in or out of your home.

Plant a Garden

Whether you have the opportunity to plant a flourishing garden or only have the space for a small indoor herb garden, there are many notable benefits of planting a garden that impact your mental and physical well-being and the environment.

Plants are highly effective natural air purifiers that absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, releasing clean oxygen and fresher air. They also reduce erosion and improve soil health.

Pollinators like bees are the main contributors to a healthy and functioning ecosystem. Adding a collection of pollinator-friendly plants and flowers will provide a valuable habitat for a wide variety of animals and insects.

Solar Energy

Installing solar panels onto your roof is the most efficient way to utilize solar energy. However, the initial investment can be costly and out of budget for many households. While the price of these panels has dropped by more than 70% in the last ten years, it still carries a hefty price tag and should only be considered and explored only if you have the financial means to afford it.

However, there are alternative home improvements one can make that embrace solar energy to reduce monthly energy bills. Heating water often accounts for around 20% of residential energy use. Solar water heaters are a cost-effective and sustainable way to reduce overall home energy usage by heating, storing, and insulating hot water around the clock.

Additionally, garden lighting features illuminating pathways, and outdoor entertainment areas can easily be replaced with solar-powered alternatives, allowing you to ditch unsightly extension cords and surge protectors while lowering your household bills.
