Storms can cause strong winds, heavy rain, and flying debris. Without the right steps, your home could suffer serious damage.

Luckily, there are simple ways to prepare before a storm hits. From windows to roofs, every part of your home matters. Knowing what to fix or upgrade can make a big difference.

These tips will help you lower the risk of damage. With smart planning, you can stay safer and protect what matters most – your home and your family.

Secure Windows and Doors

Strong winds during a hurricane can break windows and force doors open. When this happens, rain and wind can rush into your home.

To help prevent this, install storm shutters or use thick plywood to cover your windows. Make sure doors, including garage doors, are strong and shut tightly.

You can also install heavy-duty bolts and locks to keep doors from flying open. Areas that face hurricanes often, such as Florida, must take extra care.

If you’re in a risky zone, check out these hurricane-susceptible areas in Florida to see if your home is at higher risk. Taking early steps can keep you safer when storms arrive.

Check the Roof Strength

The roof takes a lot of force during a storm. If it’s weak or damaged, it can blow off or leak. That can cause major problems inside your home. Before hurricane season starts, inspect your roof closely for cracks, loose tiles, or missing shingles.

Use hurricane straps or clips to hold the roof in place. These tools help keep the roof from lifting in strong winds. A strong, sealed roof also helps keep rain out.

Trim Trees and Branches

Trees that hang too close to your home can be dangerous during a hurricane. High winds can break large branches and send them flying. These heavy branches can smash into windows, roofs, or cars. Trimming trees early helps lower that risk.

Cut weak or dead branches and remove any trees that lean toward your house. Always check the ground around large trees for signs of rot. Keeping your yard neat also helps reduce the mess after a storm.

Clear Gutters and Drains

Rain from hurricanes often falls fast and hard. Gutters and drains help guide water away from your roof and home. If they’re blocked, water can overflow and cause leaks or flooding. Check all gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear.

Remove leaves, dirt, or trash that could block the flow of water. Make sure the drains lead away from the house, not toward it. A clean drainage system helps prevent water from building up near walls, windows, and the home’s foundation.

Anchor Outdoor Items

Things left outside can become dangerous in a storm. Lawn chairs, toys, and tools can fly through the air when winds are strong. These items can break windows or injure someone. The best way to stay safe is to bring small items indoors before a storm hits.

For bigger items, use straps or anchors to keep them in place. Secure sheds, grills, and patio furniture to the ground. Keeping your yard free of loose objects helps lower damage and keeps everyone safer.

Stay Safe Before the Storm

Hurricanes can bring strong winds and heavy rain that may damage your home. Taking early steps can help keep your family safe.

Always check your home before storm season begins. A little effort now can prevent bigger problems later.
