So what is Guaifenesin? Guaifenesin is a drug used to treat cough and runny nose.

If you have a cough or cold that lasts for more than a week, it is time to see a doctor. Mucinex (generic name is guaifenesin) loosens mucus and mucus in the chest and throat, which facilitates coughing. The safety of guaifenesin in pregnant and nursing mothers has not been established and you should consult your doctor to decide whether or not to use these medications.

Side effects of guaifenesin itself can include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and rash. It is important to note that other medications used in combination with guaifenesin, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other medications, may have their own effects. Side effects affecting the nervous system are sometimes observed in people taking guaifenesin.  In a clinical study published in the journal Respiratory Research in 2012, only about 3 percent of patients reported any side effects of the nervous system. The authors considered it likely that this was not due to the drugs themselves but as a side effect of the drug itself.

If any of the above side effects are reported, Mucinex is usually well-tolerated, but if any of the usual side effects becomes troubling, contact your doctor.

The side effects associated with Mucinex are generally mild and do not usually require medical treatment. Other guaifenesin side effects may occur that do not indicate an allergic reaction, but are still very serious and can cause serious health problems. If you have any of the following symptoms that indicate allergic reactions, please seek emergency medical help immediately.

Some people may experience these side effects when they start taking Mucinex, but they find that they subside over time as their body adapts to the drugs.

With a combination of diet, exercise, physical activity, and other medications, you can prevent some of the side effects of Mucinex. If you are able to have one of these experiences, talk to your doctor about ways to prevent it.

You may experience an allergic reaction to Mucinex and if you have any of the following symptoms, you may need to contact a poison control center.

If you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome (see Delsym Warnings and Precautions), call your doctor immediately as it can be dangerous.

Patients should exercise caution when using Mucinex, including generic versions such as Delsym, as they may contain the same active ingredient, experts warn. Check the label, as the formulation can be changed to a safe dosage based on your age and weight.

Robitussedine is available in various concentrations, but the most common is 2 mg/ml.
