Moakler participated in Miss Teen USA 1992 when she was 17 years old. In 1993, she was crowned Miss Teen All-American. Two years later, she was crowned Miss New York, USA, in 1995. She finished second in the Miss USA Pageant but was later awarded Miss USA after the original winner became Miss Universe.
