A single-engine aircraft caught fire following a collision close to Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
On Saturday, authorities reported that a single-engine aircraft at Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport in North Carolina crashed and caught fire, killing many people.
The accident occurred around 5 p.m. in a forested region at the airfield, which is close to the hamlet of Kill Devil Hills, according to a news release from the National Park Service (NPS).
Nadia Popruzhenko told WVEC-TV that she saw the plane descend while she was in her car.
“At the beginning, I thought he was really high, and all of a sudden, he just went down a little too quick,” said Popruzhenko. “This one went down so quick that I thought it was too low.”
The number of individuals on board the aircraft at the time of the crash was unknown, although the NPS verified “multiple passenger fatalities.”
The Wright Brothers National Memorial will be closed on Sunday, the Park Service announced, adding that the airport would remain closed until further notice.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the collision. The Federal Aviation Administration is also notified.
According to the NPS, Wilbur and Orville Wright carried out “a series of experiments that three years later resulted in the world’s first heavier than air, powered controlled flight” in the location where the Wright Brothers National Memorial was built.
