Serif VS. Sans Serif: The Key DifferenceWhich One To Choose; Serif or Sans Serif? Conclusion

Let’s look at the significant difference between these two major font systems and how you can make the right choice for your digital product.

Serif VS. Sans Serif: The Key Difference

You must have recognized the importance of selecting a perfect font for web designing. It is critical to know the significant area of difference between two broad fonts systems;  Serif and Sans Serif. The good news is that you don’t need to have the extensive tech knowledge to understand it.

Well, you can see the difference in the names themselves. Serif fonts have a specific characteristic that Sans Serif lacks (sans means without). Serif fonts display embellishing strokes at the finishing point of each letter’s stem, resembling a foot. In contrast, Sans Serif doesn’t display any such strokes, but simple letter ending points.

Both fonts have specific purposes of serving with a separate delivery base. Hence, it is vital to understand this separation and then decide which type can best suit your product and enhance its brand value.

Serif font is a sophisticated, reliable, and straightforward font widely seen in manual mediums like newspapers, magazines, books, etc. It gives a graceful, optimistic, and well-grounded vibes to the text; hence companies with serious and reputed backgrounds prefer to use this style.

You will often see this style used by executive pursuits, particular legal bodies, insurance enterprises, and newspaper editorials. Multiple famous companies use Serif fonts like Sony, Vogue, Honda, etc.

Sans Serif font exhibits the exact opposite of the message conveyed through Serif. Serif fonts, as already discussed, majorly had vintage writing styles for formal outlook; Sans Serif, on the other hand, put on the modern conceal. These fonts lack serifs and look clean and disciplined; for this reason, web creators widely use these in web creation for better screen reading capabilities.

Sans Serif is preferable for websites based on friendly, natural, and folksy feels, the exact opposite of Serifs used for reputable businesses.

Moreover, youths of this era are more fascinated by the modern outlook of Sans Serif than that of Serif’s traditional. For this purpose, youth-centered brand owners can use these fonts for their web designing, logo creations, etc.

A few famous logos written in sans serif fonts are Facebook, Airbnb, Adidas, LinkedIn, etc.

Which One To Choose; Serif or Sans Serif?

To be precise, there are no specified rules for choosing the right font for digital branding. It depends on the type of your product, the message you want to communicate, and your brand’s central idea.

For example, a tech company will have different expectations from the font than a reserved setup.

Let’s look at some key points that will help you make the right choice.

  1. Choose two to three fonts for your site; do not exceed these numbers as too many different styles will present a chaotic display.
  2. Make sure to select fonts that go well together when used in combination. They should complement each other well, like their height, spacing, shapes should not be poles apart.
  3. Choose versatile fonts that can inculcate several weights and designs like bold, semi-bold, italic, etc.

Choose your brand’s font following these guidelines, and we ensure that you will make the right choice.

Conclusion

Both Serif and Sans Serif have widely used fonts, with the former being a preferred choice for formal businesses and the latter for casual ventures.

While there are no set rules to make the right choice, it is always good to stick to the guidelines when opting for the font for your digital branding.
