Babu made his film debut in 1973 with the Telugu film Rama Rajyam. Pattina Pravesam (1977), directed by K. Balachander, was his first Tamil film. He rose to prominence after appearing in the Tamil film Nizhal Nijamagiradhu (1978), also led by Balachander.
Balachander later became Babu’s film instructor. Mullum Malarum (1978), Babu’s first collaboration with Rajinikanth and Mahendran’s directorial debut, became an evergreen cult classic hit in Tamil cinema, and the film also marked a significant milestone in Tamil filmmaking.
