Ted Binion’s Death
On September 17, 1998, Binion’s body was discovered on a tiny mattress on his Las Vegas mansion floor at 2408 Palomino Lane, near Rancho Drive and Charleston Boulevard. Empty pill bottles were located near the body, and an autopsy and toxicology report confirmed that he died due to a drug overdose involving Xanax, heroin, and Valium. The day before he died, Binion purchased twelve pieces of tar heroin from a drug vendor and obtained a prescription for Xanax from his physician’s next-door neighbor.
At trial, the evidence established that Binion completed the prescription at a local pharmacy. Initially, it was believed that Binion committed suicide. Sandy Murphy, his live-in companion, stated that he had been suicidal for several months after losing his gaming license. His sister, Barbara, who suffered from the same substance issues as her brother, committed suicide by overdose in 1983. This contributed to the perception that Binion may have also been susceptible to suicide. Binion’s other sibling, Becky, dismissed any talk of suicide, stating that he did not sound depressed in their conversations.
Six months later, the chief medical examiner, Lary Simms, determined that Binion had perished from an overdose of heroin and Xanax. A few weeks later, however, on May 5, 1999, the Clark County Coroner’s office reclassified Ted’s death as a homicide.
Despite the paucity of information, law enforcement authorities identified evidence of a manufactured death scene and witness accounts implicating Murphy and Tabish. The detectives had long surmised that Murphy and Tabish were romantically involved and learned that Binion suspected Murphy of infidelity.
Murphy and Tabish were apprehended in June 1999 for the murder of Binion, as well as for conspiracy, robbery, grand theft, and burglary. Baden hypothesized that Murphy and Tabish had resorted to suffocation because their attempt to poison Binion had taken too long, and they dreaded being discovered. Murphy and Tabish were accused of both murder and burglary for attempting to steal Binion’s silver fortune from a Pahoepahoe bank vault.
They were charged with 25 years in prison, and her boyfriend, Rick Tabish, was charged with 22 years for a life sentence, and now they are out of jail.
