Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont spoke about abortion as he began a multi-state tour on Thursday in Oregon, but he focused on the economy—a subject that several Democratic contenders have generally shied away from during the campaign.
The trip aims to motivate young voters and boost backing for Democratic candidates who are in danger of losing their seats in the upcoming midterm elections. Sanders also has stops lined up in California, Texas, Michigan, and the key battleground states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Nevada.
Sanders told the large crowd assembled at Portland’s Roseland Theater: “This is the most significant midterm election in the modern history of our country.”
