Romania’s presidential election has taken a dramatic turn! The Constitutional Court has just upheld the results of the first-round vote, confirming a fierce run-off on December 8, 2024.
Călin Georgescu, a far-right candidate, stole the spotlight with a surprising first-round win that sparked national debates. Elena Lasconi, a centre-right favourite, strongly opposes him and strongly advocates for Romania’s pro-European stance.
The first-round results faced several allegations of irregularities, prompting a recount request. The Court’s decision now paves the way for the decisive battle ahead.
It also confirms Georgescu’s November 24 victory, which raised suspicions of outside meddling in the electoral process.
Romania the Supreme Court Judges unanimously decided to confirm and validate the result of the first presidential round on November 24 and hold the second round on December 8,” Chief Judge Marian Enache said.
This means Georgescu will face centre-right contender Elena Lasconi in the run-off.
The stakes? Immense. Romania’s next president will reshape the nation’s domestic and international trajectory, from government formation to unwavering support for Ukraine.
A day before the decision, the parliamentary election was held, with the governing left-wing Social Democrat Party (PSD) emerging with the lead. Still, far-right parties are gaining a third of seats in the new legislature.
With PSD yet to decide on a candidate for the run-off, its leader and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu reiterated the power in the people of Romania, saying, “Romanians must decide for themselves,”.
He added, “The PSD will need to be a bridge between EU-funded development and EU and NATO membership and … a part of Romanians who believe in Christian values and national identity.”
Pollster CURS conducted a survey on December 1 at various voting stations and revealed that Georgescu could win 57.8 per cent to Lasconi’s 42.2 per cent. A number of 24,629 people were polled.
