Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert was born on June 12, 1831, in Brighton, Sussex, England. He was the only child of Algernon Herbert and his wife Marianne, née Lempriere. His father was a lawyer, an author, and an expert on old things. He was also the fifth son of the first Earl of Carnarvon and a member of Merton College, Oxford, for a while.
Privately taught, he went to Rev. Edward Coleridge’s house at Eton in 1844, where he was always with Carnarvon. Even though he was considered lazy at Eton, he won the Newcastle scholarship and went to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1849.

Sir Robert Career
A few months after Herbert moved to England, Sir Robert was in charge of the Board of Trade as an assistant secretary. In 1870, he was made Assistant Under-Secretary for the Colonies. At the time, his cousin Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon, was Secretary of State. In 1871, he was made Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. He performed well in that role for 21 years.
He was made K.C.B. in 1882 and G.C.B. in 1892. Sir Robert was appointed governor of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in the same year. Joseph Chamberlain invited him to return and complete a few months of work after he left the Colonial Office in 1892. In 1893 and 1894, he was the agent-general for Tasmania and worked hard to help start the British Empire League. In December 1903, he was the head of the committee that set tariffs.
Sir Robert’s Personal Life
In the early 1850s, Robert Herbert met his partner, John Bramston, at Oxford University’s Balliol College. Both at Oxford and in London, they shared a room. When Herbert was Premier of Queensland, and Bramston was his Attorney-General, they built a farm where the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is now. Robert Herbert and John Bramston combined their names to create “Herston” for the farm where they both lived.
Herbert never got married, and writers like Robert Aldrich and Garry Wotherspoon thought he was probably gay. Herbert explained 1864 why he hadn’t called married: “It doesn’t make sense to me to tell a happy, content man to marry a woman who might turn out to be a big disappointment.”
