“So I think it’s good food for thought.
“It’s always that way in pre-season, you get a couple of players who come out of nowhere and you go I didn’t expect that from them.
“I remember Jesse Lingard all them years ago when David Moyes came and I remember Moyes saying to, “Rio, I didn’t realize Jesse Lingard was that good”.
“[Wilfried] Zaha was brilliant in pre-season, it didn’t quite work out for him in the long run but you can get your opportunity in pre-season and fly. I’m excited about some of the young players getting opportunities in pre-season it’s good.”
Meanwhile, Erik Ten Hag has provided an update on two Manchester United youngsters Ethan Laird and Tahith Chong.
The two youngsters were included in Manchester United’s pre-season squad for their Asia Tour.
Tahith Chong was loaned to Werder Breman last season while spending last season on loan at AFC Bournemouth in the Championship.
Speaking after Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory, The Manchester United manager said: “That’s why we took them with us, we want to have an impression of all the players.
“They got chance to show what they can and what capabilities they can contribute to Man Utd or maybe a loan period better, also there are other possibilities.
“This is good United has some talents, but you see they need improvements and development.”
Erik Ten Hag was also impressed with his team coming back from a goal down to beat a team that is well organized and defends on a low block.
Erik Ten Hag added: “It was clearly a really compact opponent, they started really back waiting for us, so it’s difficult for us to create chances.
“You get doubt in the first minute that something was wrong but the team reacted really good, especially on the right side.
“I would say against opponents coming forward it is easy, the space is bigger. When the opposition is that far back you have to invest in running opposite, running more and ball decisions you need intelligence to create something.”
