He stated that certain choices can only be made by an individual, “and not by the conscience of some bishop.”
According to Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not allowed to receive Holy Communion by her local bishop in San Francisco because she supported the legalization of abortion.
Durbin told authorities that “It’s very personal to Speaker Pelosi as it is to me.” Durbin also claimed that “It’s very personal to me.” During a press conference that took place on Tuesday, Senator Durbin made the announcement.
Since 2004, Durbin has been prohibited from taking Holy Communion by the Catholic Archdiocese of Springfield, Illinois. This is because Durbin himself has a history of having abortions. He has been very vocal about his disapproval of the Catholic bishops for meddling in matters that, in his opinion, should be left up to the individual conscience.
“The attitude of pro-choice Catholics by Catholic bishops differs tremendously from one diocese to the next,” he added. “The attitude of pro-choice Catholics by Catholic bishops varies greatly.”
“They were ready to act for the entire nation but then withdrew that decision,” Senator Durbin remarked about the issue surrounding the question of whether or not Catholic senators who support abortion should be excluded from receiving Communion.

To paraphrase what Durbin had to say about it, “I still believe the church authorities feel that we have problems that can only be settled by our conscience, and not by the conscience of some bishop.”
