Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy raised $20 million over the last three months, according to numbers provided to the media, as he battles to regain control of the House of Representatives.
McCarthy’s campaign team emphasized that he raised $72 million this year, a record for a House Republican leader, thanks to the third quarter’s contributions from his joint fundraising committee, which ran from July to September. And for the full election campaign, the veteran California congressman raised a record $145 million.
Despite losing the White House and their majority in the Senate in the 2020 elections, Republicans surprised many observers by significantly reducing the size of the Democratic Party’s sizable House majority. In order for the GOP to regain the majority it lost in the 2018 midterm elections, it must gain a net of five seats in the 435-seat chamber in the midterm elections in November.
