She was born on December 12, 1970, in Washington, D.C., United States of America, to Odie Hall, a contractor and electrician, and Ruby Hall, a teacher. She gained her high school education at Immaculata College High School. After graduating high school, she enrolled at Fordham University in the Bronx. In 1992, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English. She later went to New York University and graduated with a master’s degree in journalism in 1997. At 26, Hall appeared in her first television commercial in 1997. She later began her acting career with a role on the soap opera Loving. She made guest appearances on the Fox police drama New York Undercover. In 1999, she portrayed Candy in the film The Best Man. Hall gained widespread recognition with her comedy-horror spoof Scary Movie and sequels portraying the sex-crazed Brenda Meeks and the T.V. movie Disappearing Acts. Later in 2001, Hall played Coretta Lipp, a recurring character on numerous episodes of the prime-time drama Ally McBeal, who later became the main character in the fifth season.
The following year, she starred in the action drama Paid in Full, a film directed by Charles Stone III. Since then, she has appeared in numerous films, portraying leading roles in films like Malibu’s Most Wanted (2003), King’s Ransom (2005), The Honeymooners (2005), “Six Months Later” (2005), “Danika” (2006), “First Sunday” (2008), “Superhero Movie” (2008), and “Law Abiding Citizen” (2009). In 2010, he co-starred with Danny Glover, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Loretta Devine in the remake of the British film “Death at a Funeral.”
She later began a recurring role as Deputy D.A. Evelyn Price on NBC’s “Law & Order: Los Angeles.” She has also appeared in films like Grandfathered (2016), Black Monday (2019–2021), About Last Night in 2014, Vacation in 2015, Girls Trip in 2017, The Hate U Give in 2018, and Little in 2019. Hall won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for her role in the comedy film Support the Girls (2018), making her the first African American actress to win it.
