Rasmus Hjlund has joined Manchester United from Atalanta on a five-year contract, the club announced on Saturday.
ESPN reported last month that United would pay £64 million ($82 million) plus an additional £8 million ($10 million) in add-ons for the 20-year-old forward.
United manager Erik Ten Hag wanted to enhance his options up front for the upcoming season, but the club decided to focus on Hjlund instead of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.
Hjlund stated in a statement, “It’s no secret that I’ve been a fan of this great club since I was a young boy, and I’ve always dreamed of walking out at Old Trafford as a Manchester United player.”
“I am beyond ecstatic to have the opportunity to make that ambition a reality, and I am determined to repay the club’s faith in me. It is still early in my career, but I am confident I am prepared to join this cohort of world-class players.
According to ESPN’s sources, although Ten Hag previously favored adding an experienced striker to his roster, the Dutchman is now open to working with Hjlund because of his potential.
“After speaking with the manager, I realized that this environment would be ideal for my development,” Hjlund continued.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches in the world. With his guidance and support, I am confident that my new teammates and I can accomplish great things at this prestigious club.”
Last Serie A season, Hjlund scored nine goals in 32 appearances for Atalanta.
The Danish international is United’s third summer recruit, following midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea and goalkeeper André Onana from Inter Milan.
United football director John Murtough stated, “Throughout the summer, we acted swiftly and decisively to secure our primary targets early in the transfer window. This will provide Erik and his coaching staff with the best opportunity to prepare the squad for the upcoming exciting season.”
