Coined in the year of the Declaration of Independence, the continental dollar
Recently, something special worth thousands of dollars was discovered in the bottom of a toffee tin.
The Gloucestershire, England-based auction business Wotton Auction Rooms recently discovered an antique coin while assessing other things that had been brought in from a private vendor.
According to SWNS, the currency is a 38 mm-diameter pewter continental dollar that was produced in 1776, according to auctioneer Joseph Trinder.
“This coin represents a discovery that is in the top five of my career to date, and the sort of thing every auctioneer up and down the country hopes they’ll find,” Trinder also stated.
There were only 6,000 of the coin produced in all, and according to SWNS, just 100 are left in existence today.
Aware of its rarity, the coin was returned to the United States and authenticated by the Sarasota, Florida-based Numismatic Guaranty Company, which verified its authenticity.
“It was examined by a committee of specialists and X-rayed and put through other scientific tests, and we were delighted to receive a notification a few days ago to tell us that it is genuine,” Trinder stated to SWNS.
He said, “To think this is a coin that dates back to the year of [America’s] independence, and to have it found in the U.K., is unique.”
According to Trinder, the auction company hasn’t verified that there is another instance of the coin discovered in the United Kingdom.
According to SWNS, the coin was among other trinkets discovered in a container along with jewelry, carved stone, and fossils.
“We had a jolly good look through and made sure we got to the bottom of everything inside,” he added.
He said, “There were some really interesting pieces like gold coins and some other valuable items — but languishing at the bottom of this tin of treasures we found this amazing continental dollar coin.”
On October 3, the coin will be put up for auction at Wotton Auction Rooms.
