The Pope has urged for the conclusion of the Gaza war and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
In his usual Christmas Day speech, Pope Francis also urged for increased aid to Gaza to address a “crisis of humanitarian proportions.”
The conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, when Hamas terrorists assaulted Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping 240 more.
According to Hamas, Israeli bombing has killed over 20,000 Palestinians.
The Pope denounced violence against Israelis and Palestinians in a speech to thousands of worshippers gathered at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
“I express my sincere desire for the release of those hostages who are still detained, bearing in mind the anguish of the victims of the horrible incident on October 7th.
“I plead for an end to the military operations with their appalling harvest of innocent civilian victims, and I call for a solution to the desperate humanitarian situation by an opening to the provision of humanitarian aid,” he stated.
After some hostages were freed and one was rescued, Israel claims that 132 people are still being kept captive in Gaza.
“I continue to urgently call for the release of those who are still being kept captive, bearing in my heart the anguish of the victims of the heinous act on October 7th.
“I plead for an end to the military operations with their appalling harvest of innocent civilian victims, and I call for a solution to the desperate humanitarian situation by an opening to the provision of humanitarian aid,” stated the president.
Following the release of some hostages and the rescue of one, Israel claims that 132 individuals are still being held captive in Gaza.
