The Statler Brothers were a Staunton, Virginia-based country music, gospel, and vocal group. The quartet was established in 1955 to perform locally, and from 1964 to 1972, they served as Johnny Cash’s opening act and backup vocalists.
The Kingsmen were formerly known as “The Four Star Quartet,” under which moniker they performed Southern gospel music at local churches. The garage rock band The Kingsmen rebranded themselves as The Statler Brothers after the Beatles’ “Louie, Louie” success in 1963. Despite the group’s moniker, only two members (Don and Harold Reid) were, in fact, brothers, and none had the surname, Statler. The group took its name from a brand of facial tissue they discovered in a hotel room. Don Reid sang lead, Harold Reid, Don’s older brother, sang bass, Phil Balsley sang baritone, and Lew DeWitt sang tenor and served as the guitarist until Jimmy Fortune took over in 1982 due to ill health.
