Gov. Ron DeSantis says the days when Republicans gave way to big businesses “need to be over.”
In an article on Monday, former Vice President Mike Pence took a shot at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. He said that DeSantis “was following in the footsteps of the radical left” by going to war with Disney.
The former governor of Indiana used DeSantis as an example of how Republicans have given up on free market principles. He said that what DeSantis did was against American values.
“Another well-known example is Disney, a company that made a big deal about how left-wing it was by criticizing conservative changes to education and family rights in Florida. “Governors all over the country are doing the right thing by following these policies and protecting our children,” Pence wrote.
“But when the governor of Florida decided to launch a full-scale campaign of government retaliation against Disney, he wasn’t taking a page from the conservative playbook—he was following in the footsteps of the radical left,” he said.
Pence said that DeSantis’s actions put billions of dollars and jobs at risk and that he had “turned his back on the principles that make our country great.”
“There was no need for any of this. The best way to get a business to change its ways is to hit it where it hurts—in the wallet. “The American people seem to understand this truth, as shown by their grassroots boycotts and changes in buying habits,” Pence said, pointing to recent losses from “woke companies” like Target and Bud Light. He said that companies like this are being asked to explain “their ideological excesses.”
“The bottom line is that conservatives can either support government interference in the private sector for political reasons, or they can oppose it,” Pence said.
Pence officially started his campaign earlier this month. He also blamed Democrats for what he thought was an abuse of power and the constitutional order to get what they wanted and punish people against them.
He said that some Republicans would have his fellow party members “imitate” Democrats and “become progressive conservatives.”
“We don’t have to give up on our values if we want to win. We need leaders who are brave enough to tell the hard facts and have faith that the American people will gather behind our cause. Pence said, “Doctors of the American soul must always fight the urge to put what is popular over what is smart.”
Fox News Digital asked DeSantis for a response, but he didn’t respond immediately. A spokeswoman for his campaign told the Tallahassee Democrat to watch a June 5 interview on the “Brian Kilmeade Show.”
“But I also think there’s the fact that, as Republicans, you can’t just be a puppet for corporate America. You have to be ready to stand up for each worker. Small businesses need people who are willing to stand up for them. So, I think the days of Republicans just giving in to big businesses need to be over,” the governor told the co-host of “Fox & Friends.”
“Not all of these other Republicans are ready to do that. “But I think we’re willing to stand up to these people because I think they’re trying to push an agenda that’s not good for our country,” he said.
The governor has been at odds with Disney for a year, and Disney and the Central Florida Tourism board sued him.
