Panama President Jose Mulino has firmly rejected any attempts by the United States to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, following remarks by President Donald Trump that the US should take back control of the Panama Canal to counter Chinese influence in the region.
The Panama Canal, one of the most critical waterways in the world, has long been a point of contention between the US and Panama. After decades of exploitation, the US finally handed over control of the canal to Panama in 1999, following the signing of the Torrijos-Carter treaty. This treaty guaranteed the canal’s neutrality and ensured it would remain under Panamanian control.
President Jose Mulino reaffirmed this stance in a statement shortly after President Donald Trump‘s inauguration, and I quote: “I must wholeheartedly reject the remarks President Donald Trump made in his inaugural speech regarding Panama and its canal.”
“The administration of the canal will remain under Panamanian control, with respect for its permanent neutrality,” the president said, adding that “no nation in the world” was interfering in the control of the canal.
Mulino argued that the US handed over control of the canal to Panama in 1999 “as the result of a generational struggle.” He vowed to continue facilitating international trade through the vital waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. “We will exercise the right to protect ourselves,” he said.
Despite the Torrijos-Carter treaty, President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to retake control of the canal, citing concerns over Chinese influence and alleging that Panama overcharges American vessels. During his inauguration speech, Trump said the US will be “taking [the canal] back.”
Trump has pledged a robust foreign policy based on the “America First’ principle. He suggested that the US should annex Greenland and Canada, prompting criticism from officials in both countries.
Panamanians view the canal as a point of national pride and a crucial source of income, with nearly $5 billion in total profits earned in 2024.
The situation surrounding the Panama Canal is complex, with the US and Panama presenting valid arguments. While the US has concerns about Chinese influence and national security, Panama is determined to maintain its sovereignty and control over the canal.
Considering the interests of all parties involved, a balanced approach is necessary to resolve this dispute. Diplomacy and dialogue are key to finding a solution that respects Panama’s autonomy while addressing US concerns. Ultimately, a peaceful resolution will depend on the ability of both nations to compromise and cooperate, ensuring the continued stability and neutrality of the Panama Canal.
