Early Life

Orpah Gail Winfrey was born to an unmarried teenager, Vernita Lee, a housemaid, on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States of America. Oprah Winfrey went from being poor, abused, and discriminated against to being one of the most influential people in the world. When Oprah was young, she and her mother moved in with her grandmother. The family was so poor that Oprah had to go to school in potato sacks, which is a well-known fact. So she went from having nothing to having a lot. Around the same time, her mother gave birth to her half-sister, Patricia, who died of cocaine addiction in February 2003 at age 43. Oprah’s half brother from his father’s side, Jeffrey, died of AIDS in 1989. When Oprah was 12, her father, Vernon, sent her to live there. At age 13, she left her house to avoid the abuse she was subjected to.

Oprah became pregnant at 14, but the child died prematurely. Oprah first went to Lincoln High School in Milwaukee, but when she did well in a unique program, she was moved to Nicolet High School in a wealthy suburb. Oprah Winfrey began working as a radio show host while she was still in high school. At age 19, she was a co-anchor for the local evening news. Later, she got transferred to the daytime talk show industry. After elevating a third-rated regional talk show from Chicago to the top, she started her own production company. Oprah was the first black woman to be a news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. She was also the station’s youngest anchor ever. When she was 22, she was hired by WJZ, a Baltimore television station, to co-anchor the six o’clock news. This was a coveted job. She started co-hosting a talk show called People Are Talking in August 1978. By 1980, she was better known in Baltimore than Phil Donahue, whose show got shown across the country. In 1984, ABC gave Oprah her 30-minute morning talk show in Chicago. The show was produced by King World Productions, which saw her potential. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune were made by the same company, King World. The job came with a $1 million contract for four years. Winfrey also became a political force during the 2008 presidential race. Her support for Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic primaries was worth about a million votes.
