According to police, a shooting on Interstate 190 near the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, New York, on Thursday morning killed one person and injured two others.
Major Eugene Staniszewski of the New York State Police stated during a press conference Thursday afternoon that many rounds were fired from one car at another. Both cars were heading south on I-190.
The three persons shot were in a Buffalo Sewer Authority car, and all three were sewer authority workers. According to early evidence, the bullets were fired from a late model, dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Emergency personnel came on the site to give medical assistance, however one of the victims died as a result of his injuries. The two individuals were transferred to a neighboring hospital, one in critical condition and the other with non-life threatening injuries, according to Staniszewski.
Police are following up on various leads but have not established a motive for the shooting, according to Staniszewski, who added that no evidence suggests an ongoing threat to the neighborhood.
“This is obviously another heartbreaking day in the city of Buffalo,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown remarked at the press conference, referring to last year’s mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, which killed ten people.
“It is particularly heartbreaking for the employees of the Buffalo Sewer Authority,” Brown said in a statement. “Three of their coworkers shot while going about their day, working on behalf of the residents of the city of Buffalo.”
Brown said he visited with roughly 150 sewage authority employees on Thursday “to express our concern, heartbreak, and outrage over what happened to their coworkers.”
Staniszewski requested that anybody with knowledge regarding the incident, especially dash cam footage, contact the police.
