Former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, the state’s Democratic Senate candidate, has gotten the endorsement of a major racial justice organization that supports defunding and disbanding the police.
The Color of Change political action committee (PAC), which former Obama White House adviser Van Jones co-founded in 2005, said in August that it would support Beasley’s Senate campaign in large part because of her agenda of “reforming the criminal justice system.” Color of Change frequently posts on social media in support of anti-police measures and the Black Lives Matter movement.
“Police brutality demonstrates that more cops in Black areas do not make us secure; it damages Black people,” the group tweeted in 2020. “It’s time to invest in what truly keeps Black communities safe: community-led health and safety programs, rather than more enforcement. #DefundThePolice, text DEFUND to 55156.”
