According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ‘new authority’ would be required in Gaza at some point.
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israeli soldiers must “destroy Hamas” to preserve the future of the Palestinians and the Jewish state.
“If you want peace, you must destroy Hamas.” If you want security, eliminate Hamas. “If you want a future for Israel, the Palestinians, and the Middle East, destroy Hamas,” Netanyahu told NBC Sunday’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker. “We’re dead set on achieving it.” And I can assure you, [Kristen], that given the incredible performance of the Israeli army in the previous few days and weeks, we will succeed.
We’ll accomplish it with as few civilian losses as possible and as many as possible on Hamas terrorists, which we’re achieving day by day, hour by hour.”
Netanyahu stated that the goal is to minimize civilian losses and that he has not set a timeframe for eliminating Hamas, but that the process would not take many years and would take less time than the United States and the international coalition took to destroy ISIS or al Qaeda. Netanyahu did not have a specific timetable for reaching an agreement with Hamas about the release of captives but warned that “military pressure” through the operation in Gaza will be maintained for a deal to be reached.
Netanyahu also told Welker that after the battle, a “new authority” or “new administration” will be needed to oversee Gaza, but the specifics remain unknown.
On CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Netanyahu addressed allegations of individuals stuck inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital due to Israeli fire. Israeli officials have accused Hamas of constructing terror infrastructure beneath hospitals, and Netanyahu has stated that he has asked the international community for assistance in evacuating people.
“We’ve called to evacuate all of the patients from that hospital,” Netanyahu told CNN.
“And 100 people have already been evacuated,” Netanyahu remarked. “I’ve requested field hospitals.” The French president has dispatched a hospital ship on the water. I’ve requested that the [United Arab Emirates] provide a field hospital. They have done so. Other countries have followed suit. I anticipate the United Nations to construct it. So there’s no reason why we can’t just remove the patients out instead of allowing Hamas to utilize it as a command center for terrorism, rockets fired on Israel, and terror tunnels used to kill Israeli citizens.”
