Career
Neil Diamond skipped college classes to visit Tin Pan Alley, a New York neighborhood where numerous music publishers and composers had “set up shop.” Sunbeam Music Publishing ultimately offered him a $50-per-week songwriting contract due to his efforts to get noticed. Neil Diamond dropped out of college at this juncture and never looked back.
However, when Diamond’s contract expired, Sunbeam did not rehire him. In the early 1960s, he was compelled to pursue a solo career, writing and releasing unsuccessful singles. Although these singles were commercial failures, Columbia Records signed him after reading positive reviews, only to drop him after continuous losses.
By 1965, Neil Diamond’s success had increased due to his songwriting for The Monkees and other artists. Elvis Presley began to cover Diamond’s compositions as well. Diamond signed with Bang Records in 1966 and ultimately achieved mainstream success with hits such as “Solitary Man” and “Cherry, Cherry.”
Dissatisfied with Bang Records, Diamond left the label and published his debut album, Velvet Gloves and Spit, on Uni Records. By the end of the 1960s, Diamond had established his signature, mellow sound with songs such as “Sweet Caroline” and “Holly Holy.” The majority of the subsequent period was spent on tour, frequently as a one-man show.
Diamond returned to Columbia in 1973 to sign a contract to pay him a $1 million advance per album. He released the album Serenade in 1974. In 1975, the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas paid Diamond $650,000 to perform at the inauguration of their new $10 million theater.
After completing the decade with the album September Morn, Neil Diamond spent most of 1979 undergoing surgery to remove cancer in his spine. The cancer drained Diamond’s legs of all strength, leading him to collapse violently on stage.
Diamond was featured in the film The Jazz Singer in the 1980s. Diamond also performed at the Super Bowl in the 1980s. Diamond continued to pursue his music career in the 1990s, releasing six new albums. Although Diamond’s career slowed after the millennium, he continued to record albums and appear on TV shows such as American Idol. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
