Poland’s military leadership said that fighter jets were scrambled after Russia launched missiles into Ukraine early Wednesday.
Attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure were recorded in Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Kryvyi Rih, and Ivano-Frankivsk.
According to the Operational Command, Poland’s soldiers have been placed on high alert as part of a coordinated defensive strategy in areas bordering Ukraine. The approach focuses on continuous monitoring of the situation, even during vacations.
The Operational Command maintained that such actions are standard practice when anticipating threats near Poland’s borders.
Poland took a similar measure earlier this month, scrambling fighter fighters in response to Russian missile strikes on Ukraine.
In August, Poland dispatched two F-16 fighter jets to intercept a Russian Il-20 aircraft conducting a reconnaissance mission in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
The Operational Command emphasized the significance of quick readiness to counter potential spillover from the Ukrainian conflict into NATO territory.
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command stated on X: “The steps taken are aimed at ensuring safety in areas bordering threatened areas 24/7, including during the holiday season.”
Igor Terekhov, Mayor of Kharkiv, announced on Telegram: “Kharkiv is under massive rocket fire. A succession of explosions have been heard throughout the city, and ballistic missiles are still headed towards it. Stay in safe places.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Syhiba stated on X: “Another massive Russian strike against Ukraine’s energy system.”
“This Christmas terror is Putin’s response to those who spoke about illusionary” Christmas ceasefire. “”
Poland’s military will continue to monitor the situation and maintain a high level of readiness while collaborating with NATO allies. The scope and impact of future Russian actions will determine further reactions.
