With just a few days away from President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, the office of the Obamas has disclosed that Michelle Obama will not be attending the event next week.
The former president Barack Obama will, however, be in attendance.
A statement from the office of Barack and Michelle Obama said, “Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration.”
Michelle Obama’s decision to be absent from the event is a breakaway from tradition, as former presidents and first ladies typically attend such formal ceremonies.
Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush will attend the inauguration, his office confirmed. Also attending the inauguration is former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.
During former president Jimmy Carter’s funeral last week, Michelle was also absent while staying back in Hawaii while Barack was in attendance at the service at the National Cathedral, seated next to Donald Trump in Washington.
Other former first ladies, including Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump and Laura Bush, all attended the Carter funeral.
Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood is slated to perform at the inauguration of the president-elect.
