Background & Characterization
Casey is the truck company’s boss and is well-liked by his employees and Chief Boden. Casey is pretty secretive about his personal life and would rather wallow in his difficulties than seek assistance from his coworkers. Despite this, Casey loves his soldiers and will go to great lengths to protect them, even if it means defying his superiors and jeopardizing his career. He trusts the guys in his truck business and is typically pretty lenient with them in good faith. He is notorious for being severe on applicants and would often drill them directly or via one of his more experienced firefighters.
Casey is the son of Gregory and Nancy Casey, and he has an elder sister, Christie. Nancy, Casey’s ex-convict mother, who killed his violent father 15 years ago, is a burden to him. After his father died, he and his elder sister were estranged, but they have since reconciled. His romance with Gabriela Dawson was a critical plot point throughout the series, and they married in the 100th episode. After Dawson’s departure, Casey progressively drew closer to her old partner, paramedic-in-charge Sylvie Brett, and they finally fell in love.
Casey relocates to Oregon to be the legal guardian of Andrew Darden’s boys but continues a long-distance relationship with Brett. Casey, a proficient handyman, and carpenter, works as a building contractor on the side. Other characters have sought his help on construction-related matters.

Character Arc
Casey and Kelly Severide are revealed in the pilot as excellent friends from their days at the fire school and lifelong employees who are at odds over the death of fellow fireman and close friend Andy Darden due to a faulty call. However, their squabbles often spill over into the firehouse when they are not on duty, and they finally put their differences aside by the conclusion of the first season. When Darden’s wife, Heather, is imprisoned for DUI manslaughter, Casey is left to care for Darden’s two young boys. He learns that he was appointed their legal guardian in the Dardens’ will, and their time together helps him form a deep bond with the boys. On the other hand, Heather maintains touch with Casey because she blames Severide for her husband’s death.
