A prisoner from Maryland is accused of fatally beating another prisoner in his cell.
According to police, Robert Warren, 28, was found in Cumberland’s North Branch Correctional Institution on Monday, a homicide investigation is underway, said the Maryland State Police.
“A convict has been identified as a suspect. According to State Police, he has not yet been charged and will not be determined until charges are placed against him.
Allegany County’s North Branch Correctional Institution is a maximum-security facility.
“On Monday, November 25, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID) about an inmate death,” the Maryland State Police said.
“Autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Warren’s death as a homicide,” it said.
State Police said that evidence would be returned to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review when the investigation is complete.
The incident comes weeks after two correctional guards were allegedly stabbed by an inmate at the same facility.
In that November 8 incident, according to the Baltimore Banner, citing the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, “both policemen sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment”.
“More responding staff members were also treated for minor injuries,” a spokesperson from the correctional department relayed to the outlet. “The suspect did not sustain serious injuries and is being interviewed by investigators.”
