ESPN sources report that Manchester City is preparing a bid for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol after commencing negotiations with the Bundesliga club.
City has not yet made an official offer for Gvardiol, but the 21-year-old has expressed a desire to transfer to the Etihad this summer and is potentially available for the right price.
RB Leipzig values the highly regarded Croatian central defender at €100 million ($109 million), but it is probable that City’s initial offer will be significantly lower.
“Josko and his representatives have requested a transfer to Manchester City,” RB Leipzig sports director Max Eberl told Leipziger Volksnachrichten.
“We are in discussions with Manchester. There is nothing further to say at this time.”
Before determining the futures of a number of first-team players, City is still anticipating formal bids.
Bernardo Silva, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez, Kalvin Phillips, and Kyle Walker are interested in, but the club has not yet received formal offers for these players.
Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring Walker’s predicament, despite City’s desire for him to remain. The 33-year-old has one year remaining on his contract, and the club has not ruled out extending it.
Silva and Laporte are both eager to move this summer, but sources told ESPN that City will not contemplate transfers unless they receive a substantial transfer fee.
Both players are under contract with Etihad until 2025, and City will demand transfer fees commensurate with their respective contracts.
