As of right now, Democratic Rep. Karen Bass is leading the contest to be the next mayor of Los Angeles by more than 35,000 votes.
According to the most recent information available from the Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office, Bass has received 375,143 votes, or 52.55% of the vote, while billionaire businessman Rick Caruso has 338,794 votes or 47.45%.
The news comes as officials report that fewer ballots than expected—565,050 remain to be counted in elections held throughout Los Angeles County, as opposed to more than a million last week—have been cast.
A picture of what the county described as “large numbers of vote-by-mail ballots returned through the mail and received from USPS on Election Day” was made public shortly after the midterm elections.
