Liverpool has signed Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo to a long-term contract from VfB Stuttgart, the Premier League club announced on Friday.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but British media reported that Liverpool offered approximately £16 million ($20.33 million) to sign the 30-year-old Japanese international with 50 caps.
Endo said in a statement, “I’m very happy right now and so excited to join a big club in Liverpool.”
“It feels incredible, and I’m living my fantasy. It has always been a goal of mine to play in the Premier League for one of the world’s largest clubs. For me, this is a fantasy come true.
“I play the number six position, and I’m more of a defensive player. I believe I can assist this team defensively, and I will be well-organized in the midfield. I believe that is my duty.”
Endo is Liverpool’s third summer addition, following Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, as the club attempts to replace midfielders who have departed.
Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia signed long-term contracts with Chelsea instead of the club.
Liverpool opened the league season with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea and will next face Bournemouth on Saturday.
