Ritchie Torres, a liberal New York congressman, criticized the media for “sanitizing” Hamas terrorists who are mercilessly attacking Israel and have murdered at least 700 Israelis.
“You are not a militant if you massacre, wound, rape, and kidnap civilians and children, as Hamas has done. Are you a terrorist? “The media must stop rebranding terrorists as’militants,'” tweeted Torres on Saturday.
The Israeli government declared war on Sunday for the first time since the Yom Kippur War of 1973, after the terrorist organization Hamas launched a surprise attack on the country by launching missiles from the Gaza Strip.
According to officials, at least 1,100 people have died since the conflict began on Saturday, including 700 Israelis and 260 attendees of a music festival in southern Israel. The Israeli military struck more than 800 targets in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of at least 400 people.
“Hamas’s ambush terrorist attack by air, land, and sea is Israel’s 9/11. “Losing 600 Israelis is equivalent to losing approximately 20,000 Americans,” Torres tweeted early Sunday morning, before officials reported the death toll had risen to at least 700.
“Hamas, along with the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, is a terrorist organization. “In 2001, no one in the mainstream media referred to the 9/11 attackers as militants,” Torres explained.
According to the U.S. Department of State’s website, the Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas was designated as a foreign terrorist organization in 1997. Nonetheless, mainstream news outlets have referred to Hamas terrorists as “militants” in their reportage.
Torres was elected to the New York House of Representatives in 2020 and re-elected last year. He repeatedly supported Israel and referred to himself as “the embodiment of a pro-Israel progressive” in early 2019.
In addition, the New York Democrat criticized the NYC Democratic Socialists of America for planning a “All Out for Palestine” rally in Times Square on Sunday.
“In solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to resist 75 years of occupation and apartheid,” the socialist group wrote on their X account in advance of the planned rally.
“The DSA refers to ’75 years of occupation,'” Torres responded in a tweet. “According to the DSA, Israel is the occupation. terminating the occupation means terminating Israel—the home of the world’s largest Jewish population.”
“The DSA has been so normalized in New York politics that it will pay no price for its genocidal celebration of Israel’s annihilation following Israel’s deadliest terrorist attack. A sign of how much my cherished New York has declined,” he continued.
Hamas has reportedly taken many hostages during the attacks, including women and children, and U.S. officials are attempting to confirm whether or not American citizens have been taken hostage.
