SAN ANTONIO – Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV entered Wednesday’s game with the Timberwolves with 4:36 left in the third quarter to enthusiastic applause.
The cheers only got louder when the fan favorite made an immediate impact with a 3-pointer followed by a driving finger-roll layup.
“Hearing them scream, hearing them be excited and everything, their uproar, it definitely gets you excited,” Walker said. “It’s a great feeling to hear them cheer for me and my teammates.”
The Spurs lost 113-101, but Walker’s play helped the fans get their minds off the team’s dismal 6-13 record.
The second-year pro finished with a season-high 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 13 minutes. His nine points on 4 of 5 in the third quarter helped the Spurs cut a 13-point deficit to 81-78 heading to the fourth.
“He came in and brought energy,” Spurs forward DeMar DeRozan said. “He was aggressive right away. He was bringing energy on the bench. Keeping guys up, being positive. It wore off on us when he got in the game. The same way he was in the game, that’s how he was on the bench.”
Quite an outing for youngster who entered the game averaging just 1.0 points in 4.6 minutes.
