Terence Thomas Kevin O’Leary was born to Georgette O’Leary, a small-business owner and investor, and Terry O’Leary, a salesman, on July 9, 1954, in Montreal, Canada. Career
While pursuing his MBA, O’Leary interned at Nabisco as an assistant brand manager for the company’s cat food brand. He attributes his later success to the abilities he developed via this experience. After leaving Nabisco, O’Leary launched a brief career as a television producer, co-founding Special Event Television (SET) with two former MBA classmates. One of his partners acquired O’Leary’s stake in the business for $25,000.
After O’Leary sold his share of SET, he and his business partners, John Freeman and Gary Babcock started the software company SoftKey in the basement of a building in Toronto in 1986. O’Leary started the company to publish and sell personal computer software on CD-ROM for Windows and Macintosh machines.
