Though “The Real World” is often regarded as the origin of reality television, there has been one sort of reality television that has existed for far longer. Television programs about (allegedly) actual individuals suing one other over various concerns have lived since before television. Court “dramas” that began on the radio and then went to television have been popular since the mid-1940s. The semi-popular show “The People’s Court,” which ran from 1981 to 1993 and reappeared in 1997, was the court show that lay the framework for court programming today.
However, the reigning queen of court programs is the enormously popular series “Judge Judy,” presided over by former Manhattan judge Judith Sheindlin. “Judge Judy” premiered in 1996 and broadcasted 6,280 episodes over 25 seasons until finishing in July 2021. Judy was regularly the highest-paid figure on television by far.
