Joni Mitchell’s Early Life and Education

Joni Mitchell was born Roberta Joan Anderson to Myrtle Marguerite and William Andrew Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. Per her birthday, she was born under the Scorpio astrological sign. Joan holds Canadian nationality, is of mixed ancestry, and was raised in Christianity. Joan’s mother was Scottish and Irish, and her father’s family was Norwegian. Her father was a Royal Canadian Air Force lieutenant who worked as a flight instructor at RCAF Station Fort Macleod, while her mother was a school teacher.

After World War II, Joni and her family moved to Saskatchewan, living in Maidstone and North Battleford, where her father worked as a grocer. At age nine, Joni was hospitalized for weeks after she contracted polio and later began smoking the same year. She relocated with her family to settle in Saskatoon, which she considers her hometown, at age 11. Joan struggled at school because her main interest was in painting. She briefly studied classical piano while in school.

In grade 12, Joan dropped out of school to hang out downtown with a rowdy set. Later, she returned to high school at Aden Bowman Collegiate. After high school graduation, she enrolled at the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute to study art and painting.

Joni’s Career

Early Career and Breakthrough

Joni Mitchell performed for The Depression Coffee House and worked as a singer for them as a college student. She also sang on radio stations and local television. Her first trip out of rural Western Canada was when Joni was twenty years old, deciding to go to Ontario to pursue a career in folk singing. Following her arrival in Ontario, she began taking jobs playing folk music for clubs, small parties, and other informal settings. When her boyfriend broke up with her in 1964 while she was pregnant, she offered the baby girl for adoption in 1965 since she lacked the resources to raise a child.

After meeting Mitchell, folk singer Tom Rush was given one of her songs, “Urge for Going,” which he recorded performing in the late 1960s. She began working with the record label Reprise in the spring of 1968, releasing her debut album, “Song to a Seagull.” Although it peaked at an unspectacular No. 189 on the Billboard 200 album chart, critics gave it high marks. 1969 saw the release of her second album, “Clouds,” and the following year, she took home the Grammy for Best Folk Performance. Her third album from 1970, “Ladies of the Canyon,” peaked at number 27 and was later certified platinum. The album debuted at No. 31 on the Billboard Album Chart.

“Blue,” her subsequent album, was a commercial hit and is often included in lists of the best albums ever made. After the album’s release, Mitchell went on tour and produced two more highly regarded albums, “Court and Spark” and “For the Roses.” She was nominated for four Grammy Awards for the latter work and won one in 1975. Her musical taste had changed during this time, moving from purely folk to more experimental, jazz-inspired sounds. With the albums “The Hissing of Summer Lawns,” “Hejira,” and “Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter,” she brought the 1970s to a close. She also worked with jazz musician Charles Mingus on their 1979 album “Mingus.”

Personal Life

Is Joni Mitchell married? Joni Mitchell was previously married to fellow folk musician Chuck Mitchell from 1965 to 1967. Following her divorce from Chuck, she began dating bassist and sound engineer Larry Klein. After several days and months of dating, Joni and Larry exchanged marriage vows in 1987. With luck not being on their side, the couple broke up in 1994 after twelve years of marriage. She has a child named Kelly Dale Anderson.
