Galecki made his acting debut in the 1987 CBS drama Murder Ordained. With future Roseanne co-star John Goodman and JoBeth Williams, Rusty Griswold was played by Galecki in the 1989 National Lampoon film Christmas Vacation. In 1990, he joined the cast of the NBC comedy American Dreamer as Danny Nash, Robert Urich’s onscreen son; the following year, he became a regular on the ABC spinoff of Head of the Class called Billy.
In 1991, he guest-starred in an episode of Blossom with Mayim Bialik, who would later become his co-star on The Big Bang Theory. In the TV movie “A Family Torn Apart,” set in 1993 and based on a real tale of a serial murderer, he featured a juvenile offender. During his time on Billy, Galecki made frequent cameos as Mark Healy’s (Glenn Quinn) younger brother, who started dating Darlene Conner (Sara Gilbert). His original name, Kevin Healy, was changed to David shortly after he was introduced.
In the autumn of 1992, after the cancellation of Billy, Galecki was officially added to the Roseanne cast after appearing in a few more guest roles. David Healy would go on to marry Darlene and have two children with her before Roseanne’s cancellation in 1997, and he would continue to play the part until the show’s conclusion. A brief romance between Galecki’s Big Bang Theory persona and Gilbert’s would also occur. In 1995, Galecki was featured in the music video for “Satellite” by the Dave Matthews Band.
