They shared various apartments and began composing music but did not start working on albums until 1970. They were eventually signed to Atlantic Records in 1972. The duo’s first few albums were unsuccessful, so in 1975, they left Atlantic Records and joined RCA Records, where they recorded “Daryl Hall & John Oates.”

These songs include “You Make My Dreams,” “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do),” “Maneater,” and “Sara Smile,” which is a reference to Hall’s ex-girlfriend Sara Allen. In addition, he provided lead vocals for several other Hot 100 hits, including “How Does It Feel to Be Back,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” and “Possession Obsession,” which is a reworking of the Righteous Brothers’ 1965 hit. The song “(She’s the) Shape of Things to Come” was donated by Oates to the 1986 movie About Last Night soundtrack.
