Career

Early Career and Rise to fame

John Lennon began his musical career at the age of 15 and formed his first group, Quarrymen, in 1956. After the band’s second performance, he asked Paul McCartney to join, who also recommended his friend George Harrison join. In 1960, the band changed their name from Quarrymen to The Beatles. During the early 1960s, Pete Best joined the group as a drummer and toured throughout Germany.

The band later decided to stay in Hamburg, with McCartney playing bass and Ringo Starr replacing Pete Best. They had their first breakout single, “Love Me Do,” and shortly after released their debut album, Please Please Me. During that period, the band was managed by Brian Epstein until he died in 1967. In 1963, the band started appearing on television shows aired in the UK and the States. In 1966, John Lennon said his band was more popular than Jesus, saying: “Christianity will go. It will disappear and shrink… We’re more famous than Jesus now—I don’t know which will vanish first, rock and roll or Christianity.”

The following year, The Beatles dropped one of their all-time most successful albums, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. After the death of their manager, Brian Epstein, The Beatles became more business-acumen with the formation of Apple Corps. In 1969, John and Yoko Ono married and began to release various musical projects together. In 1975, his contract with EMI ended with the Greatest Hits compilation, Shaved Fish. The Beatles company Apple was finally dissolved the following year, meaning Lennon had no commitments to any record company.

Solo Career

After the Beatles disbanded, John Lennon dropped his solo debut song, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Ban. He later released top-10 international singles, “Imagine,” “Instant Karma!,” “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” and “Give Peace a Chance.” In 1971, John relocated to New York, where the Nixon administration deported him for three years for his criticism of the Vietnam War.

From 1973 to 1975, John and Ono separated, during which he produced Harry Nilsson’s album Pussy Cats. In collaboration with Elton John and David Bowie, he produced two chart-topping songs, “Whatever Gets You thru the Night” and “Fame,” respectively. In 1980, John made his comeback following a five-year break from music with Ono collaboration Double Fantasy. However, John was assassinated three weeks after the song was released.

Net Worth and Awards

How much was John Lennon’s wealth? The musical legend John Lennon accumulated a good fortune from his career while alive. At the time of his death, John was worth $20 million (which is worth $620 million in today’s dollars). Over the next several decades, his estate would earn hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties, licensing fees, merchandise, and other revenues. Yoko Ono, his primary heir, currently has a net worth of $700 million.

Besides his wealth, John has received various awards. He had twenty-five #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 as a performer, writer and co-writer. His second-best-selling solo album, Double Fantasy, secured him a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1981. John was awarded the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music the same year. In 2002, John was voted eighth in the 100 Greatest Britons in a BBC history poll.

He ranked fifth on Rolling Stone’s list of greatest singers and 38th among the greatest artists of all time. John is an inductee of the 1997 Songwriters Hall of Fame and twice in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Together, they gave birth to a son, Julian Lennon, a musician, photographer, author, and philanthropist. However, after five years of romantic journey, they parted ways in 1968. The same year, John began dating Yoko Ono and married on March 20, 1969. John and Ono gave birth to Sean Ono Lennon, a musician, songwriter, and producer.
